Satellite TV with no problem

When thinking about getting ready for my big trip to Birmingham I decided to investigate how I might watch TV................ What were the the possibilities from a narrowboat?
I investigated FreeView but this revealed there were areas still areas arround the country without coverage and aerials often needed to be on long poles! Then after talking to a very helpful Martyn at TravelSat (07914 401 036) I decided to go for mini dish and a Sky digital receiver which enables you to get loads and loads of free to air (FTA) channels. This is called FreeSat.

Martyn comes and carefully fits everything and ensures its is running. Then he demonstrates how it all works and does a bit of coaching to help you find the right satellite. This seems a bargain at £75 for which Martyn will travel to any location countrywide.
You may find that if you moor near tall trees, hillsides or high buildings then a signal is simply not available.  But down at Hallmark's base Martyn got a brilliant signal through gaps in the houses on the tow path.

This pdf at this link shows  what Martyn offers in terms of dishes, receivers and TVs.   http://www.rboa.org.uk/downloads/travelsat.pdf
I went for a 12v Pace sky minibox for the receiver and a very smart 16 inch flat screen TV with built in DVD.  This is 12v and mains too.  I also brought a a signal finder kits for £50 which has a compass  to locate the right satellite.

One great result is you can access all the BBC regional channels so you can get regional weather and use based on where you are. They are right down at the end of the Channel List.  Another is access to all the digital radio stations.
The only problem initially is there is no Channel 4 or 5. These are 'scrambled'. To get these you will have to have a sky card, and these cost £20.
